What are Modems, Routers, and Combos?
If you want to get your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet, the modem and router are the two important components of the system. Communication with your internet service provider is made possible through the modem. If it connects to your cable provider through a coaxial cable, it is called a cable modem. Connection to a telephone line makes your modem a DSL modem. The ISP’s infrastructure capability is where your model will necessarily depend on. This could be through fiber or satellite.
If you have a router then you are able to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. Devices can connect to a Wi-Fi network created by a wireless router. If there are Ethernet cables, there are also routers which has ports for these. The router connects devices to the internet through the modem. It is the recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to.
Routers have firewalls that protect them against the internet. The firewall gives protection in the hardware format as an additional protection to that provided by the software firewall in your computer.
A combination of both router and modem are combined in one piece of equipment with ADSL devices.
All modem-router combo brands basically work the same way although there are basic differences in the cosmetics or design of the devices.
You can find many types of modem-router combos to choose from which vary in prices from those less than a hundred to a few hundred dollars.
The DOCSIS 3.0 is the latest format for the standard modem for cable, if your service provider provides internet through cable network. A DSL connection has a VDSL connection for speeds greater than 15 Mbps, and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.
It is easier to choose a router. There are two types of technology in use. There is a beam forming technology for fast AC which directs a beam at your device as compared to the radius wifi technology. This is better for new devices and old ones too work well on this technology. The range of speed are from 100 Mbps to 5300 Mbps.
It is always better to buy a modem and router on your own rather than going for what your service provider is providing for a low rent. Simply spend a few hundred dollars more and you get a big difference in internet speed.
It is much better to buy a modem router combo than getting a separate modem and router. It helps in a tidy system, provided you are getting all the features of the best modem and the best router, because different brand can be used together.
